Movie Review :
Credit goes to maverick director Mysskin to bring Cheran and Prasanna together for this psychic-thriller ‘Muran’!
How?
With ‘Anjaathe’ for Prasanna and ‘Yuddham Sei’ for Cheran where both the actors were shown in different colours - a very unusual portrayal of characters, Mysskin’s assistant Rajjan Madhav has tried yet another thriller for them!
The hype that ‘Muran’ had created under the banner of UTV Motion Pictures represented a big movie in outing and if you ask whether ‘Muran’ has justified the big hype, we say go ahead reading this exclusive review - the very first online…
Nanda (Cheran), Ad film musician and an aspiring film music composer, happens to see Arjun (Prasanna), a spoiled son of a big business man, jumping out of the window in a drunkard state in a hotel in Bangalore. Nanda, who had gone to Bangalore to meet a film producer, returns to Chennai by car after missing his flight! On his way his car gets broken down and destiny brings the same Arjun, who is also on his way to Chennai by road, to offer lift for Nanda.
Both these characters of Nanda and Arjun are in very contrast and conflicting! While Nanda wants a peaceful and settled life spoiled brat Arjun wants to enjoy all the thrills in his. Right from jumping out of a 5th floor window to go on a chilling rash drive on the highway to standing at the middle of a busy road to stealing mango from an orchard Arjun takes all the risks for fun and he imposes it on the irritated Nanda too. Nanda calls Arjun a fool and his acts foolish, and Arjun calls Nanda a coward and his life uninteresting! That’s the ‘Muran’ – The contradiction!
Both reveal their flashbacks on their journey. Nanda’s wife Indu (Nikita Thukral) is a nonconformist wife, who does not want to stay peaceful with Nanda, lives her own by having male friends and night outings which brings problems between them. Like a breeze in the troubled marriage of Nanda comes Lavanya (Haripriya), a costume designer, falls in love with him.
Arjun, has a story of a strict father, Devarajan (Jayaprakash), who owns a business worth multimillion! The irresponsible son Arjun, who comes to office for fun, falls in love with Linda (Suma Battacharya), the PA of his father! The flashback at Arjun’s point of view goes that Linda was misused by Arjun’s father in a 5-day business trip, and Linda commits suicide asking Arjun to be a good son and a responsible businessman!
Here, Nanda wants to get out of the life of his troublesome wife and join Lavanya, and Arjun wants to take revenge on his father. Both vows to help each other when they reach Chennai!
Twist comes, Nanda’s wife Indu gets killed in a road accident! Arjun claims he only killed indu and asks Nanda to kill his father Devarajan in return, but Nanda, who refuses initially, is strongly persuaded by Arjun! Nanda’s girlfriend is also put in life-threat now! Here, Nanda discovers the true colour of Arjun!
So, what is the real story of Arjun? Did Nanda kill Devarajan and gets united with Lavanya? And, Arjun fulfills his vows?
Watch the thrilling climax of ‘Muran’ in theatres!
Cheran comes out with a neat performance! His facial reactions and the body language, and the dialogues in his delivery suit the character he portrays!
Prasanna… Oh, what a show! After his famous ‘Baddie’ portrayal in ‘Anjaathe’ this highly talented young actor brings out yet another powerful ‘Baddie’ act! Hats off, Prasanna! Tamil directors, please get this big talent best used…!
The female leads do not have much to perform. But, Haripriya scores better among the three with her expressions love, joy and puzzles! Nikita does not have much scope to act; still this talent does her part! Suma Battarcharya also cares well what she was assigned.
One big drawback that these heroines could not earn our attraction to their characters is their bad voice dubbing! And their non-sync expressions also sometimes irritate us. Any answers Mr. Director?
As usual, Jayaprakash has done his job well.
Debutant Rajjan Madhav, assistant of Mysskin and Shaji Kailash, could have dedicated more time to his script work as many of his prominent characters’ deeds lacks plausible reasons! And, the department of direction also could have given more importance as the actors in some places fail to impress you with their emotions – you don’t empathize with them at all!
First half travels with uninteresting events, but the second balances it with twists and turns!
Music in some places is jarring! Otherwise the debutant Sajjan Madhav, brother of Rajjan Madhav has tried to support to his brother’s script! But, songs are so, so…!
Padmesh’s camera is a solace for the dragging first half, and a strength to the thrills of the second!
Arun Durairaj’s editing could have given more cuts at some places.
This Psycho Road-thriller was first started its production under Cheran’s home banner Dream Theatres but when budget shot up UTV came to the rescue of Cheran and completed remaining portions.
So, what is the answer for the worth of big hype that UTV had created for this movie?
‘Muran’ is really a worth for that hype if it had the cohesive narration, if it had perfect characterization, if it had concentrated more on the department of direction and many ifs…
Ok, then, is ‘Muran’ watchable? Definitely, Yes!!! More than watchable, for the precise performance of Cheran and the amazing acts of Prasanna!
Go get a ticket for a thrilling ‘Muran’ entertainment!
