‘Asthamanam’ – Movie Review

Genre: Thriller
Direction, Shots and Cut: Bandi Saroj Kumar

Review

Bandi Saroj Kumar, a successful student of film studies and a dedicated student of Ram Gopal Varma, has brought out another thriller, after his ‘Porkkalam’ that saw a new style of filmmaking in Tamil cinema.

The filmmaker has presented ‘Asthamanam’ as a visual treat than a talkie cinema. Yet another unusual package of mindboggling edge-of-the-seat visual thriller from a maverick filmmaker!
Plot

A group of friends set out for an outing into deep woods only to get trapped in a frightening net and when the escape is impossible, what happens is what the film ‘Asthamanam’ is.
Performance

asthamanam movie trailer All the main characters are played by new faces Rajesh, Ramesh, Sharan, Victoria and Vidya. The performances of these young actors are good though the characterizations somewhat fail to impress us as the relationship between them is not strongly established.

Siddharth Vipin could have worked a little more with his music knowledge as such genre of films need something more what he has done for this film.

Camera and editing are also done by the director himself. With every frame Saroj proves that he is a student of RGV as the same technique of low angles, lightings, properties at the foreground are abundantly used as you see in RGV’s films. But, sometimes it looks too much, you feel repetitive of shots.

Films are not only just visuals that you see and forget it is also to understand what the visuals are trying to convey. Here, ‘Asthamanam’ fails at this at some places as though the visuals are stunning you find difficult to comprehend idea behind it. The writer-director could have worked more on the script and characterization.

Asthamanam‘Asthamanam’ is sure a good attempt in changing the face of Tamil cinema that is mostly dependant on dialogues.

But, the movie is too much of a visual treatment where you tend to get bored with the characters as you don’t relate yourself with them while watching the film.

Still, ‘Asthamanam’ never fails to frighten you at many places. Bandi Saroj Kumar succeeds with his twists and shots.

If you like watching a thriller, or a movie that is just out of the usual that Tamil cinema framework, plan a show!

And, otherwise also ‘Asthamanam’ is an good entertainer, yes, you are pushed to the edge of the seat!
