The Tamil classic ‘Karnan’, the epic drama about the famous character in ‘Mahabharata’, is released in a digital format in theatres now.
The trailer of this film is being released today at Sathyam Cinemas.
The 1963 classic is restored and rereleased all over Tamil Nadu in select theatres. Shanthi Chokkalingam of Divya Films has spent around Rs. 1 Crore to restore the film. “We restored the film frame-by-frame in a studio in Chennai. It is a very difficult process. Almost 6 reels from the negative of the picture were damaged and we did our best to restore the maximum from the damaged parts,” says Shanthi Chokkalingam.
The film has Thespian Sivaji Ganesan portraying the character of Karnan. N T Rama Rao plays Lord Krishna, and Savithri, Muthuraman, Devika, Asokan and M V Rajamma in the prominent roles. B R Panthulu has directed the film.
This film is being restored to give the present generation an opportunity to enjoy the old classic that they would never get in their life. In Hollywood classics are preserved in archives. But in India we don’t have such a body to preserve films.
In India, already, these types of restoration of classics ‘Mughal-e-Azam’, ‘Maya Bazaar’ and ‘Hum Dona’ were done in the recent past. Now we can expect more such restorations of classics of Tamil cinema.
