It is a big day today not only for Rajini fans also for the entire Tamil industry. Yes, it is the birthday of superstar Rajinikanth! The matinee idol and cultural icon of Indian film industry is celebrating his 63rd birthday today.
Born as Shivaji Rao Gaikwad in Bangalore in a Maharashtrian family Rajinikath lost his mother when he was only 5 yrs old. During his younger days he worked as coolie and struggled in life to earn his living. He joined with Bangalore Transport Service to work as bus conductor. His friend Raj Bahadur encouraged him to join the Madras Film Institute and also financially supported him. Rajinikanth was noticed by veteran filmmaker K Balachander when he was acting in stage plays and selected him for his film ‘Apoorva Raagangal’ in 1975.
Rajini went on to make hit films and became an unshaken popular actor and superstar with his mannerisms and unique style of dialogue delivery. He garnered the largest fan base with record number of fan clubs in his name. With a humble beginning as an antagonist in ‘Apoorva Raagangal’ this superstar became the highest paid (Rs. 26 Crore) actor in Asia only next to Jackie Chan when he signed the film ‘Sivaji’. The next film ‘Endhiran’ (he was paid a whopping 40 Crores) became the highest grosser in the history of Tamil cinema and the actor became very popular all over the world making numerous records at box-office and also in popularity. He was awarded the Entertainer of the Decade by media moguls.
The actor has been awarded with many other big awards including Filmfare Award for Best Actor, State Awards for Best Actor and special awards, Padma Bhushan, the fourth highest civilian award from the Government of India and many other international awards.
The actor married Latha Rangachari in 1981 and has daughters Aishwarya (who married actor Dhanush) and Soundarya Ashwin.
The superstar has acted in all the South Indian languages, Hindi and Bengali movies and has done more than 150 movies in a span of 36 years in Indian cinema. He has also done a Hollywood movie – ‘Blood Stone’. Rajinikanth is currently acting in ‘Kochadaiyaan’ that his second daughter Soundarya Ashwin directing it. ‘Rana’ was the film that he started early this year with K S Ravikumar directing it and Deepika Padukone doing the female lead. The film was postponed after Rajinikanth fell ill. The actor was admitted in Chennai and Singapore hospitals for treatment. His fans and well-wishers performed pujas and did welfare measures for the speedy recovery of the actor. Rajini took a long time for recovery from his illness. He is now completely recovered and ready to act in his ‘Kochadaiyaan’. ‘Ra.One’ was the film that Rajini recently acted in which he did a 2-minute cameo for his friend Shah Rukh Khan.
